Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday\u2026 The days of the week is one of the first things we are taught when we learn Spanish, but have you ever thought about where the days of the week in Spanish come from?<\/p>\n

Well, they are linked to the Roman times and come from Latin. The Spanish word for week, \u201csemana\u201d comes from the Latin \u201cseptimana\u201d, and the names of almost all the days of the week have their roots in Roman mythology.<\/p>\n

The Romans saw a connection between their gods and the night sky, which would change according to the days. In the same way, they started to use the names of their gods for the planets. The planets that they could easily see from Earth were the moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.<\/p>\n

The moon (in Spanish ‘Luna’<\/em>) \u2013 Goddess of the moon<\/p>\n

Mars \u2013 God of war, due to its red colour, similar to blood<\/p>\n

Mercury \u2013 God of trade, messenger to the gods, and the closest planet to the sun.<\/p>\n

Jupiter or Zeus – Father of the gods<\/p>\n

Venus or Aphrodite \u2013 Goddess of beauty and love, due to being the brightest planet<\/p>\n

Saturn \u2013 God of time<\/p>\n

The days of the week in Spanish come from these planets and gods. The first day of the week is named in reference to the moon, in Spanish ‘luna’<\/em> (Lunes), the second to Mars (Marte), the third to Mercury (Mi\u00e9rcoles), fourth to Jupiter (Jueves), and the third to Venus (Viernes). The ending of the names of the days of the week \u201ces\u201d comes for the word for \u201cday\u201d in Latin, \u201cdies\u201d.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, although it was thought to begin with that the word \u201cS\u00e1bado\u201d could have come from the god Saturn, the truth is that this word has Hebrew origins, referring to \u201cShabbat\u201d, the Jewish day of rest.<\/p>\n

The word \u201cdomingo\u201d also has an interesting history. At first, the seventh day of the week was dedicated to the sun, but with time it ended up meaning \u201cday of God\u201d, or \u201cDominicus\u201d in Latin. \u00a0It is no coincidence either that the word for Sunday has a connection to the sun and Jesus. Legends say that the Roman emperor Constantine worshipped the god of the sun, but one day had a dream that he saw a cross inside the sun with the inscription \u201cBy this symbol you will conquer\u201d. From that moment on, he declared himself a Christian and dedicated Sunday as \u201cthe day of the Lord\u201d.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s how the days of the week in Spanish came about and are still used today. It\u2019s true that it\u2019s easier and more interesting to learn a language getting to know the origins if its words.<\/p>\n
